Biomass Heating Funding Now Available

The Government of Canada recently announced funding for biomass heating projects as part of the Clean Energy for Rural and Remote Communities (CERRC). The program identifies three funding streams including one specifically for Bioheat to reduce fossil fuel use. This is a capital funding program. According to the applicant’s guide, the program is open to proponents in remote communities (not connected to national electric and natural gas grid) and rural communities (less than 1000 people and not connected to the national natural gas grid). Eligible recipients include for-profit and not-for profit entities, local distribution companies, regional and municipal governments, indigenous governments/communities as well as indigenous businesses. The maximum capital funding per project is $5,000,000 and up to 100%. The deadline for submission of year one applications is May 17, 2018. Following this deadline there will be a continuous intake. The total funding for the program is approximately $220 Million and is expected to last a number of years until all funding is allocated.
